2009 SEASON RECAP

11-3-09 Bee article

Two school records attained at ECIC Meet

The West Girls swim Team finished the season strong again ending with a 6-4 record.  This winning record is the third straight for the girls.  “This year was quite different for many reasons.  We lost a some real good seniors and another great swimmer.  We knew it was going to be tough and different.  It’s very impressive for these girls to keep winning.  Before three years ago the last winning record was 1976,” states Coach Mike O’Connor.  On Friday we travelled to Sweet Home for the Diving Competition and we watched Jessa Inglut (a seventh grader) dive very consistently and place 5th overall.  With her score of 274.25 she broke the 11 dive school record this year.  “Jessa has done a very nice job this  year, she’s really going to be very good diver  if she sticks with it.  She’s a talented gymnast and putting her on the board is exciting,” states O’Connor.

The girls had ECICs prelims on Thursday and finals on Saturday at Clarence High School this past weekend and the girls finished a really nice meet.  We started the meet off with our medley relay which placed 11th (Alyse Stevenson, Nicole Feirabend, Jaime Sciarrino and Kara Brodzinski).   In the 200 Free we had a great swim by Caitlin Lanigan placing 2nd overall with a year best of 2:01.53.  Kara Brodzinski (33rd, Nicole Feirabend (38th) and Emily Ruppert (40th) also swam the 200 Free.  In the 200 IM Victoria Luongo swam to a 17th place.  The next event was the 50 free which came down to be the most exciting of the weekend.  Alicia Wheeler placed 3rd and set the school record by one one-hundreth at prelims and then dropped more at finals to lower the record to 25.54 (just .12 off the state cut).  Also swimming great in that race was Taylor Randall dropping to a 26.01 and placing 5th.  Alyse Stevenson (33rd), Rachel Colson (47th), Kara Brodzinski (50th) and Megan Bridge (58th) also swam the 50.  The butterfly was next and Alicia Wheeler placed 5th and Jaime Sciarrino dropped 2.5 seconds to place 19th.  The 100 Free, another strong event for our girls, we had Caitlin Lanigan place 3rd , Taylor Randall place 6th, and Alyse Stevenson placed 44th.  In the 500 Free Samantha Dalka placed 26th.  In the 200 Free relay the girls continue to drop time and get closer to that state time.  The relay consists of Caitlin Lanigan, Taylor Randall, Victoria Luongo and Taylor Randall and they placed 4th overall.  In the 100 Back Emily Ruppert placed 45th.  And the last individual event we saw Vicky Luongo place 7th , Nicole Feirabend (11th) and Rachel Colson (20th).  Our last relay, the 400 free relay consisted of the same group as the 200 free relay swam a tough race and placed 6th.  “Overall the girls that did the work this year did very well.  It’s nice to see the people that deserve best times achieve best times.  The girls were excited for this meet as always and they didn’t disappoint.  To get two school records at this meet was awesome to watch and with three girls and a relay close to states it’s going to be exciting at Sectionals as well,” states Coach O’Connor.  Sectionals is at ECC on November 13th and 14th.
